Collections ...

AngelThis is just a little aside. It is essentially a list of some of Europe's best Museum Collections (and a few less so) we have visited since 1999. These collections are a great source of inspiration and perhaps you'll find something here that could inspire you. Apart from their informative content, many of these sites are examples of great webdesign. Enjoy!

  • Muzeul National de Istorie a Romaniei National History Museum, Bucharest, Romania (2012) - Be careful with this one. Although the Tourist website claims it has a rich collection (42 odd rooms) there are only a collection of gold items (inckluding the Pietroasele Treasure), a cast of Trajans column and old gravestones on display (May 2012). You pay extra for the Stamp Museum.
  • Muzeul National al Taranului Roman Museum of the Romanian Peasant, Bucharest, Romania (2012) - Slightly tired, but extensive, collection, still worth a visit. Go on a Sunday and enjoy the craft market around the museum (try the Sarmale Maramuresene, it's not bad). Like most museums, you have to pay if you wish to make photographs.
  • Muzeul National de Geologie (Geology Museum), Bucharest, Romania (2012) - Well worth a visit. Nice systematic displays. Perhaps a little dated, but still very relevant.
  • Muzeul National al Satului "Dimitie Gusti" (Village Museum) bullet Open Air Museum, Bucharest, Romania (2012) - Good collection of buildings covering most of Romania. Make sure you go on a day when at least some of the buildings are open.
  • Bran Castle, Bran, Romania (2012) - Not too much to do with Vlad Tepes, but still nice to visit. Could be a bit of a tourist trap at times. Too many souvenier shops selling the same things.
  • Muzeul de Etnografie Brasov Ethnological Museum, Brasov, Romania (2012) - Small, one room, museum centred on textiles
  • Muzeul Tarii Fagarasului (Museum of Fagaras) In Fagaras Fortress (Cetatea Fagarasului), Fagaras, Romania (2012) - The fortress was in the middle of reconstruction work (May 2012), but open to the public. Please check opening times.
  • Muzeul Civilizatiei Populare Traditionale ASTRA bullet Open Air Museum, Sibiu, Romania (2012) - One of the largest open air museums in Europe, but not quite the standard of say Ballenberg (CH), Beamish (UK) or some of the Scandinavian or German museums. Plenty buildings, but not much in the way of bringing the place to live. It still makes for a nice day out.
  • Muzeul de Istorie a Farmaciei History of Pharmacy Museum, Sibiu, Romania (2012) - Small, but interesting, museum in a very old apothocary. For the connoisseur.
  • Cetacea Poenari Poenary Fortress, Curtea de Arges, Romania (2012) - This is the one linked to the Vlad III the Impaler, but it has nothing to do with Bram Stooker's Dracula residence. However, it's a lovely location worth the 30 minutes or so up the hill (1480 concrete steps). There is an 'exiting' loo near the ruin. Come in the summer and you can combine it with the Transfagarasan road. (sadly the road was closed in May 2012).
  • Muzeul National de Arta de Romanei National Museum of Art of Romania, Bucharest, Romania (2012) - Nice to have free access and live music in this Palace of the arts during the all night opening in May 2012. The Romanian National Gallery gives a good overview of early religious paintings, but also covers the period after 1850. The European Gallery has a good representative sample and some real treasures, but it's not the Prado or the Louvre.
  • Gradina Botanica Botanic Gardens, Bucharest, Romania (2012) - If you are used to Kew standards, this garden is a 'mess'. The Romanians use it as a park. However the greenhouses (not always open) and especially the dated, but rich collection of drawings and plant material in the museum make it worth a visit.
  • Botanical Museum, Bucharest, Romania (2012) - Plenty to see. The walls are covered with plant illustations and there are samples of rare plants and items made from plants. Well worth the small fee, but not a modern botanical museum.
  • Muzeul Municipiului Bucuresti (City of Bucharest Museum) Including Exhibition "Instrumente medievale de tortura". Make sure the museum is open., Bucharest, Romania (2012)
